Ficosterra presents its first technical conference on algae extracts and microbial metabolism

Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) and Carboneras (Almería) have been the setting of the call for technicians and business professionals from the fruit and vegetable sector to explain the properties of the Macrocystis Pyrifera seaweed, which Ficosterra uses in its Cystium-k biostimulant, and the details of the Biological Crop Booster technology methods

The day began with a presentation from Professor Roberto Marcos, a marine biologist expert specializing in Macrocystis Pyrifera seaweed, a giant brown seaweed from the Pacific with whose extracts ficosterra manufactures its Cystium-k biostimulant.

Professor Marcos made a brief introduction to the historical use of algae in agriculture and stressed that since the fourteenth century there is written documentation on the collection of algae on the coasts of Ireland and France, a raw material that was subsequently burned to provide Potassium, Phosphorus, and Nitrogen to crops. These ashes became the first algae fertilizers that were used in agriculture.

As Professor Marcos told us, the first liquid algae extract was made by Anthony Stephenson in 1940, in the United Kingdom, using the Ascophyllum algae for the simple reason of its proximity to his laboratory. This liquid extract was later marketed under the name of Maxicrop.
