Ficosterra presents its first technical conference on algae extracts and microbial metabolism

Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) and Carboneras (Almería) have been the setting of the call for technicians and business professionals from the fruit and vegetable sector to explain the properties of the Macrocystis Pyrifera seaweed, which Ficosterra uses in its Cystium-k biostimulant, and the details of the Biological Crop Booster technology methods

The day began with a presentation from Professor Roberto Marcos, a marine biologist expert specializing in Macrocystis Pyrifera seaweed, a giant brown seaweed from the Pacific with whose extracts ficosterra manufactures its Cystium-k biostimulant.

Professor Marcos made a brief introduction to the historical use of algae in agriculture and stressed that since the fourteenth century there is written documentation on the collection of algae on the coasts of Ireland and France, a raw material that was subsequently burned to provide Potassium, Phosphorus, and Nitrogen to crops. These ashes became the first algae fertilizers that were used in agriculture.

As Professor Marcos told us, the first liquid algae extract was made by Anthony Stephenson in 1940, in the United Kingdom, using the Ascophyllum algae for the simple reason of its proximity to his laboratory. This liquid extract was later marketed under the name of Maxicrop.

Since then, the market has gradually incorporated different algae extracts to obtain healthier and more productive crops without damaging the environment.

To the technicians’ question about whether there are differences in the nutritional composition of the different algae used in the biostimulant industry, Professor Roberto Marcos answered with a resounding YES, stating that the Macrocystis algae, compared to the rest of the algae used is of better quality: its composition in nutrients is more complete due to, among other factors, the place where it is from since it is the only algae that experience a daily growth of 60cms., the largest growth that exists for a plant.

Finally, Professor Marcos also considered the importance of having a high-efficiency extraction methodology for obtaining active ingredients, a decisive factor in obtaining an efficient and high-quality product that distinguishes us in the market. The form of extraction that Ficosterra uses in the manufacturing process of its Cystium-k biostimulantis a guarantee,” he said, “which singles out this product.

Microbiology, metabolism of microorganisms, and their use in agriculture

Then, Alejandro Martínez, the agronomist responsible for monitoring trials in Ficosterra, made a brief explanation about the properties and metabolism of microorganisms, and then detailed their main agricultural use, pointing out the benefits they bring to crops.

Martínez also described the characteristics and benefits of Biological Crop Booster (BCB) technology developed by Ficosterra, which allows the natural state of microbial life to be restored to the soil to improve the relationship between the soil and plant. The symbiosis of microorganisms with seaweed extract transforms the nutrient so that it chemically and organically provides for the soil, making more nutrients available to the crops. In this way, very high densities of soil-regenerating microorganisms are produced.

Martínez was clear in his presentation: a naturally well-fed plant increases production, fruit set, fruit fattening, homogeneity, and has overall improved health.

These are the characteristics that Alejandro has been able to observe in the numerous trials that Ficosterra has undertaken throughout Spain with our biostimulant ficosagro ®.

Conclusions

In general, the 1st Technical Conference on algae extracts and microbial metabolism created a high level of openness between Almeria and Huelva technicians and entrepreneurs.

The growing interest in learning about innovative, ecological, and sustainable alternatives that respect the environment is obvious. This experience has confirmed that more and more business professionals and farmers are betting on organic agriculture.
